What better way to cool off from the summer heat than by mixing up a few colorful cocktails? July 4th is the best excuse to get “star, spangled, hammered” for your country. Our founding fathers fought for life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness… who’s to say that doesn’t include throwing a few back while watching the annual Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks Spectacular?
There is something for everyone, whether your friend is a lightweight or drinks like a sailor. Make any of these drinks and enjoy them in the backyard, at the beach, on the porch, or on the roof-- basically anywhere that you can take in the sun.
Your friends will come for the party, but they’ll stay for the booze. Here’s how:
Don’t Tread on Me Daiquiri: this sugary and sweet treat will keep you cool and refreshed all day.
6 cups ice
½ cup white sugar
4 ounces frozen strawberries
⅛ cup lime juice
½ cup lemon juice
¾ cup rum
¼ cup lemon-lime flavored soda
Directions: In a blender mix ice, sugar, strawberries, lime juice, lemon juice, and soda. Blend until thick. Pour even amounts into separate glasses. Garish with Blue Curacao, whipped cream, and a cherry.
Uncle Sam’s Sangria: light and refreshing, this drink will have even your most mild mannered friends thirsty.
2 cups blueberries
3 granny smith apples
1 cup raspberries
1 pound strawberries
1 cup apple juice
1 bottle dry white wine
1 bottle champagne
Directions: Mix together white wine, blueberries, strawberries, and apple juice in a large pitcher. Refrigerate for 1-4 hours. When ready to serve, slowly add champagne, apples and ice.
Freedom Fighter Jello Shot: let’s face it, who actually likes taking shots? Regardless, it’s a necessary part of any day drinking experience.
1 part grenadine
1 part peach schnapps
1 part blue curacao
Direction: First fill ⅓ of a shot glass with grenadine. Next, gently pour Peach Schnapps over the grenadine. Last, top the shot with Blue Curacao. Pour liqueur over the back or a spoon to keep the colored layers.
Star Spangled Strawberries and Blueberries: while you’re soaking in the sun, these berries will be soaking in your favorite alcohol.
1 pound strawberries
1 pound blueberries
1 cup of vodka per pound of fruit
Directions: Poke holes into the strawberries and blueberries and place berries into a jar. Pour a cup of vodka over the berries and let them soak anywhere from 1-24 hours (the longer they sit the stronger they will be). Scoop berries out of the jar with a spoon and serve immediately, refrigerate or freeze and enjoy.
Medal of Honor Mojito: drinking a minty fresh mojito is basically the same thing as brushing your teeth, right?
2 ounces white rum
1 ounce lime juice
4 tablespoons sugar
10 mint leaves
2-3 sliced strawberries
Splash of club soda
Directions: Mix ice, rum, mint sprigs, lime juice and sugar into a drink shaker. Shake well and over ice. Top with a splash of club soda, sliced strawberries and whole blueberries.
