New York City is all about being unique, and these stores are the ultimate shopping destinations for true New Yorkers. Find Christmas or Hanukkah gifts for anyone on your list, and have a good time doing it. Don’t drag yourself through department stores and their crowds for your holiday shopping this year; instead, try something different and support local businesses this year.

Reminiscence- This store is not what you’d expect from a Fifth Avenue boutique. With novelty items and gifts ranging from quirky to bizarre, they have a little bit of everything. Their vintage clothing section is perfect for statement pieces, and their collection of costume pieces is simply amazing. This is the ideal place to find a gift for the “hard to shop for” person on your list. Also, a cat lives in this store.

Enchantments- Opened in 1982, this is the oldest occult store in Manhattan. With products ranging from carved candles to tarot cards to talismans, there is something for everyone here. Get a custom carved candle for any situation: apartment hunting, love, weight loss—or have one made for your specific interest. This quirky store boasts helpful employees willing to explain the benefits of their products, so even the newest of witches can get on board.

The Strand- Home to 18 miles of new, used, and rare books, The Strand, has a little bit of everything for your holiday shopping list. For the literary connoisseur, check out the new signed editions available and the endless supply of contemporary fiction and poetry. Kids? Try the huge Children and YA department, filled with everything a growing mind could want to read. Is someone on your list not a regular reader? With DVDs, music, and vinyl, there is something for them, too.

Find something for the tykes and ladies on your list at one of their 4 locations in the NYC area.

Housing Works Shop for a cause at Housing Works, NYC’s not for profit organization. All the profits from their multiple businesses go to help support the more than 20,000 homeless and low income New Yorkers living with HIV/AIDs. Contribute to the cause by shopping at their Bookstore Café. With selections of books, movies and music, there is plenty to find here. Feeling puckish? Try their café and warm up with some coffee.
